‘Last Roundup’ of Island Goats Begins

SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. — An animal rights group began the “last major” roundup of goats that threaten endangered plants on uninhabited San Clemente Island, a Navy spokesman said Saturday.
Since 1973, nearly 18,000 ferrel goats have been removed from the island, used by the Navy for target practice, said Ken Mitchell, public affairs officer at the North Island Naval Station. He said 700 of the animals remain.
