Weekend Racing at Hollywood Park : Lukas Has 3 of 8 Starters in Today’s Landaluce Stakes

Like Ruffian, Landaluce was a talented filly whose career ended prematurely.

Landaluce, who won all five of her races in 1982 to take the 2-year-old filly championship, died at Santa Anita of a bacterial infection in late November that year.

The third running of the Landaluce Stakes is scheduled today at Hollywood Park, and three of the eight starters--La Codorniz, Al’s Helen and Arewehavingfunyet--are trained by Wayne Lukas, who also trained Landaluce. Before 1983, the Landaluce was known as the Hollywood Lassie, and in ‘82, Landaluce won the six-furlong stake by 21 lengths in the record time of 1:08.

On Sunday, seven horses are entered against favored Fran’s Valentine in the $150,000 Hollywood Oaks.

The field, in post-position order: Wayward Pirate, to be ridden by Dario Lozoya; Lady Dom Alaric, Rafael Meza; Outstandingly, Bill Shoemaker; Deal Price, Gary Stevens; Magnificent Lindy, Eddie Delahoussaye; Ice Stealer, Ray Sibille; Shywing, Fernando Toro, and Fran’s Valentine, Chris McCarron.

Toro resumes riding this weekend for the first time since he suffered liver and kidney injuries when his mount broke down in a race June 1.

Shywing, however, won the Valkyr Handicap with Bill Shoemaker at Hollywood Friday and apparently will be scratched from Sunday’s race.
