LAS VEGAS — Temperatures reached 100 degrees at 9 a.m. Friday and climbed to a blistering 116 between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m.--just a degree less than the all-time high in this desert city.
The last time Las Vegas was that hot was Aug. 1 and Aug. 3, 1979.
The city’s record 117-degree temperature was recorded in July, 1942.
Nevada Power Co. generated a record 1,647 megawatts of electricity by 5 p.m. Friday, breaking a 1,620-megawatt record set June 18.
Continued hot weather was forecast for the weekend. The National Weather Service expects afternoon temperatures of 115 degrees in the gambling center and even 120 degrees at low-lying areas around Lake Mead and Lake Mohave.
