Two Los Angeles-area men suspected of robbing a La Jolla jewelry store in broad daylight Friday were arrested three hours later as they attempted to flee into Mexico at the San Ysidro border crossing, said Bill Robinson, a police spokesman.
Gary Allen Crawford, 19, and Donald Myler, 21, both of Gardena, were booked into County Jail on suspicion of robbery and auto theft. Three other suspects, two men and a woman, escaped the scene of the robbery, in the 7000 block of Girard Avenue, Robinson said.
The incident began about 11 a.m. when four men and a woman, armed with hammers, walked into Wakeman Hammack Fine Jewelers, broke display case and took large quantities of platinum.
The two men and the woman escaped in a van and are still at large. Crawford and Myler left the scene in another van that had been reported stolen in Whittier.
