Shortstop Vince Lopez sent the game into overtime with a two-out home run in the ninth inning and UCLA defeated USC, 5-4, in the 10th inning Friday in a Pacific 10 Southern Division baseball opener at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
Second baseman Torey Lovullo scored the winning run for the Bruins, racing home from third base while teammate Gary Berman was involved in a rundown play between first and second.
Lopez, whose homer came on an 0-2 count, also doubled and singled as the Bruins beat the Trojans for the first time since 1982. UCLA had lost eight in a row to USC, which had also won seven straight at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
Right fielder Jeff Wetherby knocked in all four Trojan runs with two home runs, his fifth and sixth of the season. He had three of USC’s five hits.
The win was the eighth straight for the Bruins, raising their record to 10-4. The Trojans are 7-5.
The teams will meet again today at Dedeaux Field at 1 p.m.
