Greek Cypriot Leader Censured Over Unity Plan

NICOSIA, Cyprus — The Cypriot Parliament on Friday passed its first-ever censure motion against President Spyros Kyprianou for his handling of talks at the United Nations last month with Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.
The House of Representatives voted 23 to 12 for a motion by the right-wing Rally Party criticizing Kyprianou, leader of the Greek Cypriot community. The motion called for presidential elections unless Kyprianou immediately accepted a draft agreement discussed at the U.N. meeting.
The talks at the United Nations foundered over the status of the draft agreement, which Denktash said should be signed without changes but which Kyprianou said required further negotiations.
The document set out the framework for a bi-communal federal republic with a Greek Cypriot President and a Turkish Cypriot vice president.
