Nicaragua has introduced chemical warfare equipment into Central America, building up a supply of decontamination trucks, protective clothing and other defensive material, Pentagon officials said. However, Gen. John W. Vessey Jr., the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told the House Foreign Affairs Committee that the Sandinista regime has shown no sign of storing offensive chemical weapons. “Why do they want defensive chemical weapons when there’s nobody else in the region with an offensive chemical capability?” Vessey asked rhetorically.
