Corsairs Take Shot at Playoffs

After the Santa Monica College men’s basketball team ends regular season play Friday by meeting Bakersfield at 7:30 p.m. in Santa Monica, the Corsairs will take on Pasadena on Wednesday in the first game of a playoff series to select which will be the second entry from the Metropolitan Conference in the state tournament. As the conference champion, El Camino gained automatic entry.
As the week began, the Corsairs (14-13, 7-5) were tied for third with Pasadena (13-13, 7-5). The teams were scheduled to meet Wednesday in a game that would break the tie and give the winner home court advantage at the start of the Shaugnnessy Playoffs.
Second-place Long Beach (23-6, 10-2) should play fifth-place Harbor (12-13, 6-6).
The Corsairs are hitting 48.2% of their shots from the field and 65.6% from the line. In league play the team’s strengths are forward Don Dorsey (12.5 points, 6.1 rebounds), guard Tim Preston (11.5 points, 4 assists, forward Mike Bragg (11.5 points, 6.8 rebounds) and forward Kim Jones (10.2 points, 7.1 rebounds).
The Corsairs beat Los Angeles City, 71-69, in quadruple overtime last week but lost to El Camino, 36-34.
