County supervisors Tuesday ordered a report on the bidding process surrounding the purchase of a $1.8-million IBM computer after a representative of another computer manufacturer told them his company could have provided similar equipment for $200,000 less. Charles Fonner, vice president of Sunnyvale-based Amdahl Corp., questioned the county’s decision to seek bids only from companies selling IBM computers, a decision that prevented Amdahl from bidding on the equipment purchase. Fonner argued that Amdahl’s computer was just as good as the IBM the county bought Jan. 4 and installed last weekend. Supervisor Susan Golding said she was “very uncomfortable” with the process that allows the county to seek bids from only one manufacturer.
