Detroit — When Monte Clark was fired as head football coach of the Detroit Lions at the end of the 1984 season, he accepted the bad news with a quotation from Ralph Waldo Emerson.
“What lies behind us and what lies before us are small matters compared to what lies within us,” was the comment of the one-time star offensive tackle.
