Swoon Gets Win After Antigua Is Disqualified

Swoon was declared the winner of Friday’s $37,000 feature race at Santa Anita because Antigua, the first horse to cross the finish line in the 1 1/8-mile turf event, was disqualified because of interference in the stretch.

Antigua, ridden by Eddie Delahoussaye and carrying 116 pounds, finished fast to cross the finish line 2 1/2 lengths ahead of Swoon but was disqualified to third because of the interference with about an eighth of a mile to go. Antigua was timed in 1:48 1/5.

Swoon, a 7-year-old son of Secretariat ridden by Bill Shoemaker and carrying high weight of 119 pounds, paid $7, $3.80 and $2.60.

Top Match was moved up to second because of the disqualification of Swoon.

Laffit Pincay was aboard two winners Friday before a crowd of 20,350, raising his lifetime total of victories to 5,998. Only Shoemaker and the retired John Longdon have recorded more wins in thoroughbred racing history.
