The Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health has awarded about $151,00 to the San Antonio Mental Health Center for an adult day treatment center and an outpatient program for children and the elderly, said Steven Fishman, San Antonio program head.
The funds will enable the center to treat severely mentally ill children ages 5 to 14 and adults over 65, Fishman said. The center on Eastern Avenue currently treats about 1,000 chronically mentally ill persons, ages 14 to 65, every month.
About $84,000 of the funding will be used to set up a day treatment center for mentally ill adults who need supervision and therapy, Fishman said. The day treatment center, serving approximately 10 patients for four to six hours daily, will be staffed by the El Centro Community Mental Health Center, a private clinic.
The two new programs are scheduled to begin after the San Antonio center moves to a larger building on Garfield Avenue in April, Fishman said.
