SAN DIEGO — San Diego State pitcher Billy Blount picked up his 27th career victory to tie a school record in the Aztecs’ 11-2 nonconference baseball victory over Cal State Long Beach on Wednesday afternoon at Smith Field.
Blount scattered six hits over seven innings to lead the eighth-ranked Aztecs (2-0). Long Beach fell to 0-2.
A run-scoring single by Kirk Hansell and an RBI groundout by Frank Mendecina gave SDSU a 2-0 lead in the first inning against 49er losing pitcher Howie Townsend. In the fourth, the Aztecs scored three more runs, led by first baseman Mark Grace’s run-scoring double.
After Long Beach scored two runs off in the sixth to make it 5-2, SDSU rebounded with six runs in the seventh. The outburst included a three-run home run to right-center field by designated hitter Scott Webb.
