The seriously ill son of Los Angeles County Fire Inspector Richard Stirling got to see his father promoted to captain in a ceremony held beside the boy’s bed at Children’s Hospital in Orange. Doctors said that Steve Stirling, 15, is in the last stages of cystic fibrosis, which has affected him since birth and which took the life of his only brother, Jeff, 12, six years ago. Stirling’s wife, Bobbie, also attended the promotion ceremony for her 43-year-old husband. The couple lives in Long Beach.
