Baseball: Mater Dei is a team in peak form

A four-run fifth inning has given Mater Dei a 7-0 lead over Simi Valley Royal in the Division 1 semifinal. Tyler Abbott has been replaced on the mound by Vito Messina.

I saw Mater Dei lose its opening game of the season, 17-2, on March 5 to Corona Santiago, and all I can say this is a team that has made dramatic improvement and seems headed to the Division 1 final.

The young players have grown up, such as freshman catcher Jeremy Martinez and sophomore outfielder Ty Moore. And with Cory Hahn on the mound, the Monarchs just aren’t going to lose.
