Jeff Kearin has resigned as football coach at Los Angeles Loyola for ‘personal reasons’ and will be replaced on an interim basis by defensive coordinator Adam Guerra, school spokesman Ben Tomlin said Saturday.
Loyola had a bye this week and is 2-2 on the season after a victory last week over Bellflower St. John Bosco. Kearin took over for Steve Grady in 2005 and guided the Cubs to the Southern Section Division I championship in his rookie season as coach. But the Cubs didn’t make the playoffs the next two years before returning to the post season last year.
This season, Loyola lost its top player, running back Anthony Barr, to a broken leg in the second week of the season.
The news might come as a shock to Loyola players because they had not been informed of the decision as of Saturday afternoon. Tomlin said Kearin submitted his letter of resignation on Friday.
Kearin could not be reached for comment. Loyola plays next Saturday against Valencia at Valley College.
