[Updated at 9:50 a.m.: Word of the separation spread throughout the political world after Politico broke the news. It was then reported by the Associated Press and other media outlets.]
In a story posted on its website, the political journal said it had obtained an e-mail sent by the married couple of 40 years to their friends and supporters.
“We are announcing today that, after a great deal of thought and discussion, we have decided to separate.
“This is very much a mutual and mutually supportive decision that we have made together following a process of long and careful consideration. We ask for respect for our privacy and that of our family,’ they said.
Al Gore, the former vice president who found a new lease on his political life, eventually winning a Nobel Prize for his environmental efforts, has been married to Tipper, a photographer, for 40 years. They have four children.
